Making a music video…

In 2021 I joined the world-famous Sheringham Shantymen - a group of around 20 chaps who perform sea-shanties and a handful of other great folk songs (Fields of Athenrye is a favourite of mine). We have around 30-40 gigs a year ranging from church halls, to huge sea shanty festivals and everything in between.

One of our favourite gigs every year is a charity gig at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier and this year we decided to add a new element and make the most of the huge video wall they have at the back of the stage. I made a few videos using some old clips I found to go with some of the songs - Wellerman, Outside Track, etc but there was one stand-out song at this gig as we made a custom video for it telling the story of the song using some of the Shantymen as actors. Jamie Crisp was the star of the video, despite, at that point, still not being a full-fledged Shantyman (attendance at 13 practice sessions and then getting through the ‘rigorous’ voting process is required before fully getting a spot with the group!).

Below is the video we made, with thanks to Jon Payne for help with the musical track recording/synch/planning, Leanne for make-up & filming the live version and of course Jamie and the other Shantymen who starred in this comedy video of the song we made - The Close Shave…enjoy!
